Programme of Activities

Week 1: Induction
Day 1 and 2 Cultural orientation
  • This aims to ensure that all students know how to work well with the communities
Veterinary field orientation
  • This will introduce to the students the real tropical veterinary field expectations, protective gear, handling of animals, equipment requirements and storage of various products
Day 3, 4 and 5 Farm practice
  • Animal handling
  • Restraining in field situations
  • Herd health and options for tropical conditions, practice clinical work, de-worming of sheep, goats and cattle
Day 6, 7 Vaccination programs
  • Vaccination of farm animals, practical sessions for students
Week 2: Disease control activities with Maasai livestock
Day 1, 2, 3 Vaccination programs field
  • Students will participate in vaccination programs for cattle in the Maasai villages
Day 4, 5, 6 Vaccination activities
  • Vaccination for sheep and goats and rabies vaccine for dogs
Day 7 Rest
  • The community usually spends Sundays resting and going to church. Students can go for a game drive or game walk in the nearby Tarangire national park
Week 3: Control of ticks and tick borne diseases
Day 1 Introduction to tick borne diseases A lecture on tick borne diseases, their importance in tropical countries, their control options etc
Vaccination against East coast fever The students will participate in the vaccination of calves against ECF using the infection treatment method (ITM).
Week 4:  Sampling and research methods
Day 1 and 2 Introduction to sampling and research methods
  • Students will get a chance to practice sampling of animals by taking various blood samples and processing them for the lab
Field sampling
  • Students will participate in sampling of animals
Other activities to be included depending on the location where the students are staying
Week 4 Attachment to a wildlife and livestock laboratory
  • This is only possible if the Ngorongoro area conservation authority give permission
Control of poultry diseases
  • Vaccination against Newcastle disease and other poultry diseases.
  • Sampling of poultry will also be demonstrated.
